Week 24 - 02/08/2008 PDF Print E-mail

With the water dropping at a good rate, I knew it was bound to be a good week of fishing here at the lodge, and the group here made it even better. Our anglers boated a total of 1080 peacock bass with 56 of those being 10 lbs. or better and 6 of those being 20 lbs. or better.

On his 37th week down here, Nelson caught this week’s monster (and the biggest fish so far this season) at 26 lbs. In second place we have Ronnie and Darrel with 22 lb. peacocks each. Gary Sellers came in third with a 20.5 lb. peacock on the last day. Then we had one of our lovely ladies, Betsy with a beautiful 20-pounder.

  • The most fish of the week was caught by one of our fly fishermen, Ron, with 96.
  • Another one of our fly fishermen, Don Humphreys, caught the most fish in one day with 26.
  • George waited until the last day, but he got his beautiful 16-pounder.
  • When Don Coney wasn’t out fishing, he was putting his medical skills to good use fixing up my hand as I was giving a lesson on what not to do.
  • Dwight caught 4 16-pounders this week, but to top it off he brought in a 19-pounder.
  • Ken said he felt well rewarded after a week’s hard work by catching an 18-pounder.
  • Roy and Cynthia came down here to fish and see the local wildlife, and I think they did pretty good taking over 500 pictures and bringing in 2 16s.
  • Coming all the way from London, Alex had the experience of pulling in a 16 lb. peacock on his fly rod.
  • One of our crazy Cajuns, Blake, caught one of the biggest fish this week at 19 lbs. Bob Hughes had 2 15-pounders this week.
  • Fishing around the world together, Steve and Dale decided to try their fly rods in the Amazon ending up catching close to 100 fish between the 2 of them.
  • Guinn had such a good time catching 24 fish in one day that he decided to stay another week, that and he still has to top Betsy’s fish.
  • Another one of our wonderful couples this week, Kenny and Susan caught 89 fish between the 2 of them not to mention a 14 and a 16.

Another week ends as everyone head back home (though some decided to stick around for another week) with cameras full of pictures and many stories to tell. It was a great week guys. I hope to see all of you next season, and have a safe trip home.

What is a Peacock Bass?

Called "tucunare" in Portuguese, the peacock bass is a born ambusher and one of the most ferocious freshwater fish you'll find anywhere. Interestingly enough, the "bass" portion of the fish's name is a bit incorrect.
