Rio Negro Lodge
By Andrew Marsteller
Another great week of fishing at the Rio Negro Lodge with our anglers boating 1965 peacock bass with 103 of those being 10 lbs. or better and 8 of those being 20 lbs. or better.
- This week’s monster goes to Betsy at 23.5 lbs. Right behind her was her husband Guinn who along with Bill Robinson both caught 22-pounders. Then we had Nelson with a 20-pounder.
- Richard had the most fish this week with 144.
- Right behind him was his father-in-law Budd with 122.
- Trey caught a 19-pounder on the last day, and his father Lynn finished the week with a beautiful 17-pounder.
- Jeff had an 18-pounder as his big fish this week, and his father John didn’t do too bad with his 16.
- Though a little tired from 2 week’s fishing for peacock bass, Larry’s still not sure he’s ready for those freezing temperatures back home after the nice weather we’ve been having here.
- Dean caught a total of 84 fish this week including a couple of teens.
- Used to fishing for black bass, Pat thought he was doing pretty good with his 14, until he got his 15 that is.
- Matt pulled in 95 fish on his fly rod this week.
- Lanny’s biggest fish was 17 lbs., but you should ask him about the fish that almost pulled his son Conner in the water.
- James waited until the last day to catch his 16-pounder.
- Our group from Alaska decided they needed some warmer weather as they celebrated some very special Birthdays. Among them Carol Padgett, who caught a 17-pounder, Mack who had a 15-pounder, John who had 2 14s, Alain and Miriam who caught 62 fish in one day with Alain’s biggest for the week being a 16-pounder, and Carol Motsinger who caught 20 fish on her best day.
- Another one of our fly fishermen, Chip ended the week with 63 fish.
- After catching a 19-pounder you’d think Billy would be all smiles in the picture, though
Billy said he didn’t smile to keep me from using his picture in any of our publications. And his friend Bill brought in a 17-pounder with a knot on its head that was bigger than the one on Billy’s 19.
- Kent had a beautiful 16-pounder this week.
- You could find Gib and his group of boys from Fort Worth sharing their stories poolside each day. Among them you had David Ellis, Derek Ellis, Dick Ellis, and David Stoval. David Ellis had one of the bigger fish this week at 19 lbs. When he wasn’t fishing Derek was kind enough to use his skills as an oral surgeon to help our cook CeCe’, and then again Derek and his father Dick helped our kindergarten teacher by performing minor surgery.
- Mark and Pat said they just couldn’t handle any more fish after catching 125 fish in 3 days.
Another great week guys! I hope to see all of you next season, and have a safe trip home.

What is a Peacock Bass?
Called "tucunare" in Portuguese, the peacock bass is a born ambusher and one of the most ferocious freshwater fish you'll find anywhere. Interestingly enough, the "bass" portion of the fish's name is a bit incorrect. Learn more...
